Will this someday be the only sail fish left in Manzanillo?

I find it exceptionally ironic that Manzanillo in the state of Colima boasts the largest sail fish in the world in its town square yet the state and federal government of Mexico is allowing the commercial fishing industry to decimate the population. Here is the interesting part. Some how the state government of Colima and the federal agency of Conapesca have decided that the law protecting sport fishing species in Mexico should only be enforced on the weekends. Basically Friday through Sunday.

Now Monday to Thursday the approximately 150 pangas dedicated to long line fishing and the capture of Sail Fish and Dorado is permitted as long as you don’t do it to close to the coast. Yep that is right, I didn’t make any of this up its the gods honest truth. Over the last month I have spoken with commercial fisherman, sport fisherman, operators of fish markets. They all confirm that there is an agreement with fisherman that Friday to

One of the hundreds of Pangas that long line for Sail Fish
between Barra de Navidad and Manzanillo

Sunday is for Sport fisherman and Monday to Thursday is for commercial fisherman. I have also been told that many commercial fisherman fish when ever they feel like it of course.

Here is Ines’s report in Spanish, my report in English may take a more sarcastic tone and will be out in a week or so.

  1. This also continues to be a bigger and bigger issue in the Zihuatanejo area. Friends have sent me picture after picture of morning pick-up truck loads of Dorado and small Shark being carted off.

I have only been sport-fishing the area for about 12 years, so I don’t have the yesteryear experiences that other do, but about the last 3-4 years is when the long lines have, to my perception at least, really taken off.

Years before you might have run into a ball of snarled equipment here and there.

Last March, I was treated to 8 miles (from about the 20 mile mark on out) of crisscrossed long line area. Everywhere that we went there were bobbing clear 20oz bottles in each and every direction. The entire area out 180 degrees was unfishable, and may well have been one of my last off-shore trips in the area.

  2. Same story all over Mexico, same here too. That panguero could have been here I recognize his panga have seen it all over. That woman at the table is a paiso, she’s saying the exact same things we have heard too many times in Loreto. They must have a script.

Now where the hell are the “non-governmental organizations”. The same ones who are in and out of the doors of our public offices? It is not a question of saving the sport fishing industry now, it is a question of responsible management of our nations marine resources! Those in charge have failed at this miserably for years and it is a proven fact backed up by years of endless data and studies. As a Mexican national whose property is being stolen and who’s children’s future is being sold off cheaply, I want accountability!!!

    • Yes the gal from Conapesca pretty much held the party line and was full of the usual excuses for why Conapesca is incapable of doing its job. It is unfortunate that I did not realize until after the meeting that the real story here is the agreement that has been reached between the commercial fisherman the state and federal government and the sport fishing sector. It is a completely bull shit agreement but it shows more than ever how politics in Mexico work and how everything is negotiable regardless of what the law states. This is truly the story and I wish I would have pursued that angle a bit more but alas we are leaving Manzanillo tomorrow if the wind is right. Lets see how long it takes everyone to be disillusioned by the new PRI administration.
