In the first week of Ocotber 2022 Worlds Aquarium used it’s 40 foot Catamaran at Isla San Jorge to rescue entangled sea lions. Our mission was a complete success. We captured 16 animals, disentangled 13 and took research data on two juveniles. Below are a few videos and images of the trip. We are now in the planning stages for October 2023.
Disentanglement and Rescue Partners
CABET/Rescate de Lobos Marinos, a Mexican non-profit out of La Paz Baja California Sur dedicated to the protection of sea lions in the Sea of Cortez
Grupo Lobos, a Mexican sea lion rescue non-profit based in Campodonico, 35 miles south of Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Mexico.
Training Partners
The Marine Mammal Center (MMC), located in Sausalito, California deserves special thanks since it was the first non-profit I reached out to when researching sea lion disentanglement. MMC has provided myself and so many volunteers training in sea lion disentanglement in the Gulf of California. I hope very soon we will be working with them again.
Governmental Partners
PROFEPA, Mexico’s version of America’s FDA
CONANP, Mexico’s version of America’s national parks system
Any non-profit engaged in sea lion disentanglement must work closely with the following two above mentioned governmental agencies. And it should be mentioned that permits to work in the field must be acquired through, Secretaria de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, SEMARNAT.
