What We Do

Disentanglement

The process of disentanglement of marine mammals begins with committed individuals who are willing to spend their own time and possibly their own resources to go into the field to do the dirty and difficult job of saving the life of a marine mammal that is slowly and mercilessly being strangled to death.

Dolphin Refuge & Protection

All over the world, people have decided with their pocketbooks that dolphin captivity is no longer in fashion. It is cruel and unusual treatment. Documentaries such as The Cove and Blackfish have exposed the greedy underbelly of the industry. We aim to work with local authorities and the
local fishing community to establish a dolphin refuge area near San Carlos in the Sea of Cortez to make sure wild dolphins can live undisturbed in their native habitat without threat of entanglement or capture.

San Carlos is no different. Even though San Carlos has a resident population of bottlenose dolphins that have resided here for decades if not centuries, in 2006 a dolphinarium was constructed with public financing. This dolphinarium was controversial from the beginning of its inception. Over the years, many dolphins would die in captivity there. Then almost beyond belief in April 2012, officials from the state government in charge of operation of the San Carlos dolphinarium plotted to illegally capture several of our local population of dolphins and place them in captivity. Thankfully because of a fearless whistleblower no attempt was made to capture our wild dolphins.

Our local population of dolphins are now threatened from the growing tourism industry, where local boat captains with no training whatsoever approach our pod of dolphins during mating season and shortly after female dolphins have been given birth.

Our Proposal for a Marine Protected Area in San Carlos
